Peas are consumed for their protein-rich content. They are low-fat, high-fibre and also very rich in vitamin A, D, E and K. One will be surprised to know that out of the total world production of peas, only 5 percent are sold fresh, the remaining ones are sent to be frozen or canned. Just 100 grams of peas offer approximately 7 grams of protein. Unlike other frozen products, frozen peas are actually better than fresh ones. Here are some reasons why.

While fresh peas need to be consumed soon after picking, frozen peas have a longer shelf life. If stored properly at a cold temperature (in the freezer), frozen peas might last for a year. Frozen peas are usually preserved at an early stage, so that they taste good for a longer period of time, whereas fresh peas become mushy and turn starchy within a few days.

Shelling out peas is a tedious job. Especially when one is in a hurry, no one has got enough time to first take out peas from the pods and then start with the cooking process. In situations like these, frozen peas come to our rescue. Frozen peas are easier to use sans the hassle of shelling and storing them out. One can easily buy a packet of frozen peas from the market and use them whenever you want.

Freezing peas at their ripest preserves their texture and sweetness. Fresh peas might tend to start tasting grainy once they turn stale. Ideally, there is not much difference in the taste of the peas. You might feel a bit of a difference in the taste, mainly due to psychological reasons.

Fresh peas lose half of their Vitamin content within a day of picking, whereas all the nutrients remain intact in frozen peas as they are frozen in their early or ripe age. Freezing the peas as soon as they are picked is the best way to keep their nutrients intact.
